Horsham Fight Back But Are Defeated

For the first fifteen minutes of the second half, Horsham hit Slough with all they had got. They scored twice in ten minutes and had Slough penned in their own half. But this was the only time that Horsham really got on terms with their faster, tougher, and more experienced opponents.

Horsham‘s second half rally put them well back in the game and, had they scored the equaliser, the result might well have been different. As it was, Slough took the score to 4-2 and Horsham were then well out of the running.

The Horsham goal took some punishment in the opening thirty minutes or so, and Slough were very unlucky not to score. But this showed no discredit to goalkeeper Phil Loveridge, who pushed, punched, and plucked the ball out of the air every few minutes. Slough forced corner after corner, and Loveridge had to take something like twenty goal kicks during that period.

Horsham weren’t without their share of bad luck and Roy Mobsby went very close when he flicked in a pass from Geoff Crowther but Prebble finger-tipped it away.

In the 23rd minute Mick Browning was through on his own and a goal looked certain, but Prebble narrowed the angle and the shot went wide.

Slough took the lead in the 39th minute when inside-right Willis scored from close in.

Straight from the kick-off Browning was through again but, again, his shot went wide.

Four minutes later, Slough‘s captain and most forceful forward, Jakubiec, shook off the Horsham defenders and went on to crash in Slough‘s second goal.

Just on half-time left-winger Morley centred and Roberts headed in to give Slough a 3-0 interval lead.

Then came the big Horsham revival. They threw everything into attack and it paid dividends.

Within four minutes, Brister broke away down his wing and centred for Mick Browning to head in a glorious goal.

Six minutes later, Browning chased a ball as it was going over the line for a goal kick and cut it back for Mobsby to crash it home.
Horsham went all out for the equaliser but in the 60th minute Slough, who looked as though they were wondering what was hitting them, came out of their trance and pressed the Horsham goal. They forced a corner and Driver scored on the goal line.

Soon after this, Loveridge‘s throw to Crowther was intercepted by Driver and he pushed the ball across the goal mouth for Morley to score.
