Slough eased their way to the top of the Athenian League with this fine win over Redhill on Wednesday night. Always looking a class above the home side Slough, with Reardon missing due to illness and Turl out through injury, powered their way into a 2-0 half-time lead through the ingenuity and fire power of Tony Amos.
Netting the first goal in the 28th minute with the sort of shot that made the trip to Redhill worthwhile, he followed up three minutes later with another effort which hit the bar and rebounded for Ray Hill to coolly slot home.
That first goal really had the crowd buzzing. Ray Hill passed the ball out to Amos on the right, who collected the ball and strode to within 10 yards of the angle of the penalty area before unleashing a shot which soared into the far corner of the net without the keeper moving.
Unfortunately Amos was involved in a clash with the Redhill keeper just before half time and did not appear for the second half. The extent of his injury was not immediately known, but any absence of a player of this calibre will cause Slough a lot of worries.
After an opening 15 minutes in which the home side looked very aggressive, Slough slowly took control of the game and forged forward. When the goals came they were well on top, although after the interval, with Crosbie replacing Amos, much of the bite was missing up front.
The home side began to become more adventurous although the few efforts they had at goal were competently dealt with by an on-form Wolstenholme. On two occasions he brought off fine fingertip saves to maintain Slough's "no goals against" record.
This was the thirteenth meeting between the two Clubs since Slough joined the Premier Division, Slough having won 9 and drawn 4 leaving the Surrey Club with a very bare haul.
