Slough Town moved up into second place in the Premier Division of the Athenian League with this win at Lewes on Saturday. Before the kick-off, Slough, who arrived at the Dripping Pan Ground with over an hour to spare, went out onto the pitch for a pre-match warm-up, with all 13 of their players taking part.
Afterwards manager Tommy Lawrence announced his team, which excluded Dave Swain and Terry Reardon as well as injury victims Roger Day and McPhee.
Into the side came John Hobbis, Micky O'Sullivan and Steve Crosby, with the latter, in a defensive midfield role, having one of his better games for the club.
Back on form was goalkeeper Ian Wolstenholme, which was just as well because Slough were often under considerable pressure, especially in the last quarter of the game, when Lewes threw themselves forward in an effort to take at least a point.
After 20 minutes Slough scored what was to be the only goal of the match. Peter Cruse latched on to a pass from D'Arcy and raced off down the right wing. He went around the full back, and although his low cross eluded O'Sullivan, Ray Hill was on hand to score from close range.
This was Hill's fifth goal of the season and his sharpness in front of goal will be missed during his two week's suspension. This goal gave Slough a boost, and for a while they took the initiative, but their finishing was not up to much.
In the 30th minute Amos was booked. The Slough striker had been given some rough treatment by Lewes centre half Blacktin, and eventually he retaliated after being kicked whilst lying on the ground.
In the second half Slough attacked strongly from the start but the finishing was again poor, and apart from a fine shot from Amos which hit the bar, Swaysland in the Lewes goal was not seriously troubled.
Gradually the home side, looking the stronger in the hot conditions, took control with Stevens in particular looking dangerous but they still could not score.
