Slough back to the top of the Athenian League table with this 2-0 win over Boreham Wood at Slough Stadium on Monday night.
With Roger Day and Ian McPhee still injured and top goalscorer Ray Hill starting a 14-day suspension Slough looked a little weaker, on paper, than of late but they put in a much better performance against a Boreham side that relies overmuch on height, weight and enthusiasm, perhaps had they included a ball player in their line-up who could slow the game down they could possibly have taken home a point that they so often looked like taking.
But the honours must go to Slough and strangely to the player who looked completely out of place Tim Turl. Playing at left-back, Turl did not look very happy and he gave the visitors right flank so much room that it was fortunate they did not use it more often. On two occasions Turl went for a stroll up field, he did not appear to break into even a trot on either occasion but finished each stroll with well taken goals that completely took the heart out of the visitors.
Make no mistake the two goals were not lucky, the first a full blooded volley from 25 yards in the 33rd minute which the keeper did well to touch as it rocketed into the back of the net and the second in the 61st when he he leapt up to back head an up and under which Mike Jackson had intended for a clearance and it went well past the keeper and Slough were two up.
The first half was almost exclusively Slough, better defensively, more direct in midfield and with Wolstenholme having his best game for weeks the Slough goal did not look in any danger, it was up front that Slough were weakest, Amos was fouled whenever he worked himself into dangerous positions and seemed to receive little protection from referee John Homewood, whilst O'Sullivan and Turl just could not connect with the chances that came their way.
Turl's goal came with Slough pressing once again, McClean tried to clear the ball out and there was Turl to volley home from 25 yards. In the 50th minute Wood should have been on level terms when Jackson missed an open goal but 11 minutes later came Turl's second goal and Slough then took the visitors apart but without scoring any further goals. In fact so much did Slough press that they were awarded 3 corners in the last minute.
