Slough Town struck top form on Saturday when they slammed five goals into Aveley, a victory which took them to the top of the league table a point ahead of Dagenham who have a game in hand.

It was a first-class performance and the close on crowd of 900 gave the team a big ovation at the end of the match. The scorers were Dave Swain (2). Tony Amos, Terry Reardon and Steve Crosby. Slough have now scored 19 goals in nine league matches against 5, easily the best record in the Premier Division.

Slough were without Ray Hill, under suspension, Roger Day and McPhee but had D’Arcy in the rearguard and John Hobbis as substitute.

Aveley started well and indeed most of the first half held Slough at bay, with only a Terry Reardon goal showing against them until the 42nd minute when Crosby got a goal that must have dredged a lot of spirit from the hard-working visitors.

Slough had been faster on and off the ball, playing fluent football that Aveley could only halt but certainly could not match and after the interval Slough became the complete masters, playing the ball about with an authority that was a joy to watch.

In the ninth minute Slough were in front; a scramble in the Aveley goalmouth and the ball was half cleared to Reardon, who volleyed it back for the keeper to parry but it flew on into the back of the net.

In the next five minutes Slough threw everything forward but Aveley held out. The play now centred around the midfield but keen though the visitors were they could not match the midfield drive of Reardon, the obvious strength of teamwork between Reid and Cruse or the drive of the Slough front runners and as the first half entered its last five minutes Slough really put on the pressure.

A D'Arcy free kick in the 41st was cleverly deflected by Reardon bringing a fine save from Clark, but seconds later Swain weaved his way through the packed Aveley defence and with the defenders in a tangle around him he slipped the ball back to Crosby who hammered it home via the foot of a defender to make it 2-0.

After the interval came the real destruction as Slough took the visitors apart. A Reardon corner in the 51st was headed on and there was Swain to nod home his first goal of the season.

With Slough forcing forward the entertainment was spoiled by the booking of Tony Amos in the 57th for retaliating to a foul by Allen, a player who was to go into the book some few minutes later.

With the visitors falling back to total defence Cruse found himself surrounded by defenders in the 63rd but in keeping the ball between his ankles, which were ceaselessly kicked for his trouble, the referee awarded a drop ball which rolled out to Amos who lobbed it high into the goalmouth where Swain leapt to back head it goalwards and Clark could only help it on its way into the back of the net.

The final goal was the best of the lot. Swain put Cruse away on the right and after racing to the byline he crossed for Amos to flash the ball home with a great first-time header.
