Slough Town, a team that had played 360 minutes of football without conceding a goal, scoring 13 in the process, maintained their record for exactly 150 seconds against Woking in this FA Cup Qualifying game at Slough Stadium on Saturday. A crowd of just over 1,000 saw Slough give one of their poorest performances of the season allowing a very poor but determined Woking side to force a replay.
On a day when only Keith Mead gave a performance anywhere approaching average, the Slough team played into the hands of the very tall Woking side by persistently playing the ball into the air. High balls down the centre or high crosses were easily dealt with by the six-foot-plus defenders while the short Slough forwards could only leap desperately into the air.
One would have thought that Slough would have altered their tactics but this they did not do, and, although looking the better side for most of the game, they could not score the goals and it was Woking, in charge for the first and last 15-minute periods, who almost stole the game.
The game started with a red-shirted Woking rush, the home defence were pinned back in their own area and after two and a half minutes Cruse and Crosley combined to allow Oram to push the ball to the unmarked ex-Walton star Gale who had only, Wolstenholme to beat and fired the ball home giving the keeper no chance.
For the rest of the first quarter Slough held back the Woking pressure and slowly turned the tide but having done this they persisted with the high balls down the centre which were easily cut out by the giant defenders.
It was not until the 40th minute that Slough got on to level terms, Amos put Swain away on the left and his cross struck Cruse on the back and bounced away from the goal but Cruse pivoted and hooked the ball into the back of the net.
Slough almost took the lead directly after the interval when a Reardon header brought a superb save from collier. Despite having most of the second half play Slough could not get in the shots at goal and when Meade was injured in the 65th minute the Woking forwards got back into the me. Crosby came off in the 2nd to be replaced by Roger Day and it was Day who almost scored the winner when he volleyed a fine effort in the 87th which Collyer did well to clear.
