Slough Town increased their lead at the top of the Premier Division of the Athenian League on Saturday with a very comfortable 4-0 victory over bottom of the table Grays Athletic. It was one-way traffic to the Grays' goal for practically the whole of the 90 minutes and the Rebels could easily have doubled their score. The gate was 800.
Three goals in the first half from Slough in no way reflects the run of the play, had it been 6-0 it would have been more in keeping with the flow of play up to the interval.
Slough started well against a side that used desperate measures to stop them and gained three free kicks in the first 15 minutes, completely dominating the play. The first goal came in the 6th, Cruse crossed the ball for Amos to hit home, maintaining his position as the club's top goalscorer.
In the 11th, Turl had an easy chance but hit the ball straight at the keeper, between the 15th and 18th minutes Slough gained three corners but press though they did, they could not get in the final touch and we had to wait until the 34th minute for the second goal. Day and Cruse combined on the right and the ball was crossed for Ritchie to leap high above the defence to head home a fine goal.
Two minutes later from yet another corner, O'Sullivan deputising for unwell Hill, lobbed the ball over the bar, then in the 40th Slough went further ahead. Turl hit a long diagonal pass from just inside the Grays half on the right to the far post and with the keeper hesitating Ritchie raced in and headed home his second.
After the break it looked as though Sough were out to create a goal scoring record as they tore the Grays defence to shreds, but slack finishing became their worst enemy, Ritchie hit the post in the 51st, Amos slid the ball across an empty goalmouth in the 55th, but on each occasion no one was waiting to pounce and push the ball home.
A corner in the 56th, Turl had an open goal to head into but incredibly the ball sailed over the bar, Almost immediately Amos burst through but before he could get in his shot he was brought down just outside the area; Turl's free kick was blocked in the goalmouth. In the 61st Turl made a good run down the right but was badly fouled by Baker for which the latter found his name in Mr Markham's book.
After Turl had headed over in the 62nd from another corner Grays came into the game for the first time, managing to get their first shot at goal in the 64th, followed one minute later by a corner. The pressure did not last long, Slough soon got back on top and in the 75th they completed the scoring. Two free kicks and from the second D'Arcy's kick was met by Ian Reid's head and the ball flashed into the net to make it 4-0.
