Slough Town’s visit to Broughnine Road was heralded by the locals as the visit of the most powerful amateur club in football and although the scoreline does not look as though the game was one-sided, it was all Town from start to finish. Boreham had suffered only one previous defeat in front of their own supporters, but one that Slough ignored as they kept the game almost exclusively in the Wood’s half.
Slough opened well, racing at the home defence and sweeping them aside as though they did not exist. In the second minute Amos laid on a chance for Ritchie but with an open goal to put the ball into he missed his chance. From then on the pressure stayed on the Boreham Wood goal. Superb moves from the Slough players had the Wood supporters sportingly applauding. After a goalmouth scramble in the fifth minute Slough went in front from a free kick taken by Cruse on the left was mis-headed by a defender, and Cruse was on hand to lob the ball over the advancing "keeper.
Three minutes later Day chipped the ball into the area and Ritchie fired it past the goalkeeper only for Pardy to clear off the line for a corner. Slough continued to press, Richie, having a field day, weaved his way through in the 15th but his shot was turned for a corner. From the kick Day back-headed the ball to Amos but his effort was headed off the line by Chapman. Despite continued pressure Slough were unable to increase their lead and just before the interval the home side made a few sorties into the Slough half but not one shot was fired on the Slough goal. Wolstenholme had only back passes, poor crosses and the occasional long-range no-hope shots to deal with.
After the break the home side looked a little more effective, not allowing Slough the time to settle on the back and it seemed to be paying dividends as they gained their first corner of the match in the 55th minute and another two minutes later and from this second a fine inswinger was cleared off the Slough line by Eaton. But it was not to last and Slough soon regained their composure.
From their 10h corner, in the 64th minute, the ball was again cleared off the line, and in the 68th Ritchie made another of his mazy runs, rounded the keeper and shot at an empty goal but a defender racing in cleared the ball off the line yet again. In the 70th Slough completed the scoring. Cruse, lying deep hit a long diagonal pass and Ritchie standing on the penalty spot leapt high to deflect the ball at a static and bemused keeper.
After this Slough were content to maintain possession and make the home side do the running as hey coasted to yet another fine win.
