Was This Victory Really Worthwhile

B&B Senior Cup
Slough Town are through to the semi-finals of the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, beating Stony Stratford 2-0 on Saturday, but after this hectic game they must be wondering if it was all worth while. The North Bucks club brought their own brand of village football to Slough Stadium and made it obvious from the start that they did not expect to win but were determined not to lose by any great margin and employed tactics which received much criticism from the home supporters.

To the visitors credit they employed the offside trap and they used it well with Yerby and Cruse finding themselves stranded time and time again much to the annoyance of the Slough supporters who seem to have forgotten the time not so very long ago when this "trap" was so well used by their own side.

What must be worrying for the Slough boss Tommy Lawrence was the complete absence of thought on the part of his strikers when faced with this problem.

Having mentioned the visitors' credit side there was unfortunately another side, their lack of the basic skills was supplemented by a brand of football that was a disgrace to this high standing of football.

In defence they thought nothing of shirt pulling or aggressive tackles and they were not averse to using other methods to stop the Slough attacks. The most blatant piece of non football came when Smart knocked out Peter Cruse with as good a right hander as one could expect in a boxing ring. For his trouble he found his name in Mr Hugge's book but to the amazement of all present he was not asked to leave the field. So rough were the Stones' tactics that Keith Mead spent most of the game hobbling with a very clear set of stud marks running the length of his thigh. Tony Amos received knock after knock until he had to leave the field on all fours. Ray Eaton was brought down on almost every occasion that he tried to overlap on the wing and so it continued.

Immediately after the restart Amos weaved his way into the Stony Stratford area and was unceremoniously bundled to the ground. The referee right on the spot had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Roger Day easily converted to put Slough one up.

Four minutes later Slough increased their lead when Dave Yerby for once not offside received a pass from Turl, outstripped the Stones' defence and hammered the ball past the advancing 'keeper.

Within two minutes another name was in the book, this time Tony Amos for a foul on Smart. The game now slowly faded away. Slough refused to hold the ball long enough to be roughly tackled and the visitors did not have the skill to disturb the Slough defenders. A substitution in the 65th of Jeff King for Matthews made little difference and in the 80th minute Lovell found his name in the book for a foul on Eaton. The dying minutes saw Amos crawl off the pitch and O'Sullivan played out the final three minutes as Slough coasted home.
