Athenian League Cup
Slough Town added two more victories to their long list on Saturday and Monday when they knocked Chesham out of the Athenian League Cup and routed Maidenhead United in a Premier Mid Week League fixture by 5-1. These triumphs sound a warning to Windsor and Eton and Sutton United who meet the Rebels in cup-ties on the next two Saturdays.
Slough took another step in their quest for the Athenian League Cup with this slim 2-1 win over Chesham at Amersham Road on Saturday. A last-minute goal from Roger Day put Slough into their second cup semi-final of the season.
Once again the very sticky conditions did not suit Slough's type of football but there were times when they looked as though they were coming to terms with these conditions. For Slough Ray Eaton was ineligible, lan Reid was injured and Peter Cruse was relegated to the substitute's bench; Dave Yerby came in at full-back, Micky O'Sullivan in midfield, and Stewart Jamieson up front-changes that proved a little unsettling to the rest of the side.
Following a minute's silence in memory of the late Berks and Bucks Councillor Teddy Knott, the game got under way with Slough looking the much better outfit, but the home side slowly got into the game and gained their first corner in the ninth minute, one minute later Weeks raced through, but shot straight at Wolstenholme. Slough began to play some very constructive football after this and in the fifteenth minute they went in front, a long, high ball from Turl was headed down by Ritchie for Hill to blast along the ground and into the net.
During the early minutes and more so after the goal, Chesham's ageing star, Len Worley, and Slough's Roger Day continued a niggling verbal and physical bout which resulted in Worley being booked in the the twenty-fourth minute. The home side were at this stage guilty of too much physical football, but as they steadied down they began to look more effective.
Following three Chesham corners Le Sage made a break on the right hotly pursued by Dave Yerby, who lunged into the tackle inside the box, and Mr Smith had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Harper took the kick and gave Wolstenholme no chance to level the score for the interval.
The second half produced a lot of frustrating football with both sides making mistakes in the muddy conditions.
In the dying minutes extra time looked a certainty and Peter Cruse was warming up to come on when Slough gained a corner on the left. Day took the kick which curved into the goalmouth and Wells, who had kept goal so well all afternoon, could only turn the ball into his own net.
