Once again, Slough Town's dreams of appearing in the Amateur Cup final at Wembley were shattered when they were well and truly beaten by Enfield in the quarter final.

This was the fifth time Town have got so near and then failed but never have they gone out as they did on Saturday, failing in almost every department of the game. Tim Turl and Ray Hill were the only Slough players to live up to their reputations. The gate was officially returned at 2,100 and quite half of the spectators must have come from Slough.

Slough were without Day, still on the injured list, and Reardon was again passed over which was probably an error on Tommy Lawrence's part for Terry is a great player in a tough cup fight.

It was two blatant defensive mistakes that allowed two goals in two minutes in the 10th and 12th minutes and Slough without the guiding influence of Roger Day never really recovered. Despite long periods of pressure they just could not penetrate the Enfield defensive barrier and on the rare occasions that they did get shots in they found Williams, the Enfield keeper, in magnificent form.

Despite pulling one goal back through Reid in the 17th minute Enfield were again two goals in from in the 36th and the second half saw Slough throwing everyone up in attack stretching their defensive lines and with the goals not coming frustration set in and Enfield, seizing the opportunity, grabbed two more goals to end Slough's magnificent run at 32 games without defeat whilst dealing out the biggest reverse Slough have suffered in years.

After the final goal the Enfield supporters, well outnumbered by the visitors from Slough, proffered the final humiliation with chants of 'Easy Easy."

The early minutes were played at a very fast pace but it was the home side who looked to have the edge and Turley gave a sample of what was to come when he fired in a fine shot in the sixth minute which Wolstenholme did well to tip over for a corner.

In the tenth Enfield were in front with a long bouncing ball into the Slough area which Wolstenholme should have gathered, but he hesitated and then dropped the ball for Gray to drive home.

Two minutes later it was 2-0 when D'Arcy lost control and Turley raced away to hammer a curving shot into the top right hand corner of the Slough net.

Slough still pressed forward and their efforts were rewarded in the 17th when a long throw from Amos bounced about the Enfield area and Reid volleyed it home on the turn. With the Slough supporters' hopes raised Slough piled on the pressure and in the 22nd Cruse had a shot blocked on the line by Williams but slowly Enfield regained control and in the 36th Adams centred for the completely unworked Butterfield to volley home number three.

After the break Slough played their best football. Ritchie had a fine shot saved by Williams in the 58th but despite a period of Slough superiority the shots at goal were very few and in the 72nd Enfield put in the killer punch, a corner on the left was badly cleared by Wolstenholme to the feet of Tilley who hammered the ball into the back of the net through a ruck of players.

After this the Slough heads dropped, although they still tried to push forward leaving gaps at the back and in the 89th Gray ran clear, drew Wolstenholme off his line and slotted the ball home to make it 5-1.
