Athenian League Cup
Attendance: 600
Slough are through to the final of the Athenian League Cup, set to do the double of League and Cup, an achievement that has not previously been equalled. With only three points needed from four league games to take the league title, Slough will be out to beat Dagenham in the final of the League Cup to add the two trophies to the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup which already decorates the mantelpiece.
At Aveley, the supporters, who numbered a meagre 600, were not treated to a very good game of football. The home side, who had lost only one game in their last 12and that to Slough-seemed determined to stop Slough by any means possible. Referee Markham had quite a busy afternoon, booking two Aveley players, one of whom was later sent off, and also booking Slough captain Roger Day.
With Ray Eaton cup-tied, Ian Reid reverted to the full-back spot with Jamieson coming into the forward line in the reshuffled line-up. The only goal of the game came from Terry Reardon in the 39th minute, and, this effort apart, neither goal came under any real danger.
Slough, with their injury problems almost resolved, suffered yet another blow when Amos had to go off with a badly bruised muscle in the 58th minute, to be replaced by Yerby.
The early minutes went to the home side and pressing forward, they looked good until they reached the Slough penalty area. But there Alf D'Arcy and company took command. Holden lobbed just wide from a corner, and he looked very dangerous in the early minutes.
During the first minute, Aveley's Kinsey was booked for ungentlemanly conduct but this did not deter the rugged Aveley side, who looked much more at home on the uneven surface with slope and wind advantage. As play settled, the ball went from end to end, and just after Aveley's fourth corner, Day found his name in Mr Markham's book for a foul on Kinsey.
A free kick by Amos brought the goal: from the right the ball went out to Reardon, who coolly lobbed the ball home.
The second half saw Slough, with the elements in their favour, very much on top. Well into this half, a D'Arcy freekick was headed down by O'Sullivan for Reardon, but the ball was cleared off his boot before the Slough goal-scorer could get in his shot.
In an atmosphere of resignation the Aveley players looked to have given up, and, following a mix-up between D'Arcy and an Aveley forward, tempers became a little frayed and Kinsey received his marching orders for a foul on Reid.
