The Bitterly cold wind and end of the season outlook kept the "gate" down at the Stadium on Saturday, but when it was realised Slough were the champions of the Premier Division there was plenty of enthusiasm. The game was a poor one with Slough again showing a great lack of striking power. The goal which spelt victory was scored by Alf D'Arcy, who fired home a 25-yard "banana" shot that went into the net off a post.

Slough opened well and Reardon had a chance in the fourth minute to put Slough ahead from a long Amos throw but the ball was just too fast off the ground. In the seventh Cheshunt had their first go at goal. But despite a good build up Poole saw his shot pass the wrong side of the crossbar. Straight to the other end and Reardon and Hill combined to walk through the Cheshunt defence with quick short passes only for Hill to shoot wide.

After this the midfield play became very even but Slough looked better in breakaways, a 16th minute free kick from D'Arcy was turned for a corner by goalkeeper Byrne, easily Cheshunts man of the match.

In the 19th a Slough corner was well turned by Hill but shaved the post. Slough got well on top after this but with Wolstenholme almost a spectator the defence relaxed and almost paid the penalty when after a terrible mix up in the Slough goalmouth Sedgeworth fired wide of an open goal. Just on the half hour a clever through pass from D'Arcy put Amos away on the left but his cleverly flighted lob brought a magnificent save from Byrne.

After the interval Slough got completely on top. An Amos shot was tipped over for a corner in the 47th, a Day effort was scrambled off the line in the 49th and in the 52nd came the corner that produced the goal.

One up and Slough never looked like allowing the visitors a look in. In the 61st a Reid cross was headed past the goalkeeper by Hill but headed off the line. After this the visitors substituted Pudney for Sedgewick and what a difference this ex-Dagenham schemer made.

Pushing his colleagues forward he brought urgency into their game and almost snatched the equaliser himself when his shot rattled the Slough crossbar in the 84th, but Slough were not to be denied and calmly held on to the vital one-goal lead until the final whistle.
