Slough Town played their last Athenian League game of the season at Cheshunt on Friday evening and with a 1-0 victory finished up champions with a clear lead of five points over Dagenham the runners-up. Throughout the season they only conceded 17 goals which is a record for the league.
This is also Slough's best ever season in the league and is another great triumph for Tommy Lawrence the team manager. The Rebels were without Ray Hill, and Tim Turl, both injured but they had Ray Eaton, and Tony Amos, on duty.
The game did not reach great heights but as it was the season's end this was not surprising. Slough did enough to win but Cheshunt certainly made big efforts to wipe out that goal to which Slough hung on to for so long.
Slough actually got this all-important goal in the first couple of minutes when Terry Reardon took the ball from an opponent and pushed it through to Stewart Jamieson who showing great "cool" calmly steered it into the net.
After this Slough slowed down but they still found time to build up some good attacking moves. Cheshunt wasted a lot of chances but the Town defence always seemed to hold the whip hand.
In the second half Slough should have added to their goal tally but the ball did not run for them and Amos was particularly unlucky in this respect. Byrne, in the Cheshunt goal, brought off some good saves particularly from Day and Reardon, the latter's effort was probably the best goal attempt of the day.
Cheshunt gradually faded out of the picture and the game came to a somewhat tame conclusion.
