Slough's first game in the new Rothmans Isthmian League provided them with a win worth three points, but with a few problems that manager Roy Sleap will have to sort out with the minimum of delay.
Goals from Roy Davies and Geoff Anthony — the second coming in the last minute - were two of the brighter spots in a display that did little to excite the supporters.
An overall lack of understanding in the side is perhaps acceptable with a new team at this stage of the season, but the obvious weakness in defence is something that will cause Slough a lot of trouble.
The forwards, Peter Lavers and whoever else had the inclination to assist them, looked good at times. The old Lavers artistry of laying the ball off could well have provided more goals and Anthony could have caused a lot more trouble to the Aveley defence but the two of them were given little support.
Tommy James had one of his less successful games and Brendan O'Sullivan has yet to gain the necessary understanding with the other players, so it was left to Roy Davies, Slough's man of the match to do most of the prompting up front.
Unfortunately after four good shots in the first half and a goal after five minutes of the second this very good player forgot the other ten in Slough shirts and played by himself.
Reardon, captain of Slough, was rarely able to come forward to assist the attack. Reardon became almost a second centre-back with Barry Davies playing well, but entre-back is certainly not Reardon's best position.
Full-backs Reid and Turl kept a tight grip on the flanks but without a better understanding across the back Slough are going concede a lot of goals.
The game opened well for visitors, the blue shirts of Aveley were so prominent that Slough have been in real trouble. Two corners in the first three minutes almost produced a goal but Caterer was to head off the Slough goal line.
Slowly Slough came into the game and by the end of the first quarter of an hour they had gained control, but the only worthwhile efforts at goal could be counted on one hand, the best coming from Roy Davies in the 23rd minute when he raced into the Aveley defence and had a fine shot turned away for a corner.
The first-half ended on a sour note when Aveley’s Cawte was booked for a foul on Anthony. After the interval Slough pressed forward and within five minutes were in front. Roy Davies raced across the outside of the Aveley penalty area and fired home, giving ‘keeper Callington no chance.
After this the game slowed, the afternoon heat beginning to take its toll, but Aveley kept trying to get through the Slough centre. They could well have levelled the score on the hour but Reid was on hand to head off the line.
Two minutes later they were on level terms when Wimpory waltzed through the Slough defence and Reid in desperation brought him down inside the area. Webb slotted home the penalty.
Four minutes later Reid was in the book when he repeated the foul, this time on Major, but outside the area. The game lost its pace and both sides seemed to have accepted a draw, but in the 90th minute Slough grabbed the winner.
A half clearance from the Aveley goalmouth was pushed back to Anthony, a lone amber shirt in the midst of the Aveley defence. Quickly controlling the ball he turned between two defenders, rounded another and pushed the ball home past the advancing Callington.
With only seconds to go an Anthony header was just over the bar.
