Slough dropped two valuable points on their visit to Carshalton, a couple of should never have been in doubt as it was all Town in the first half, but rank bad finishing cost them dearly. It was a different story in the second half with Carshalton gaining control and almost snatching outright victory in the last ten minutes.

Peter Lavers resigned from Slough on Friday to return to Leatherhead and young Steve Lane tool his place.

Slough were forced to make another change as Ayling failed to arrive at Carshalton due to a car breakdown, and Crosby was brought in and Brown was upfront with Lane, but they could not round their clever approach work with goals against a stubborn defence.

Slough started well, gaining two corners in the first five minutes but the Carshalton use of the offside trap kept them at bay. Slough's first real chance of the game came in the 13th minute when Reardon headed over from Slough's further corner.

Two minutes later the home side had their first chance when a long through ball saw Hedges closing fast, but Spittle raced off his line to kick the ball clear. In the 20th, Carshalton went close with a header but play immediately switched to the other end and Crooks, Carshalton's most dangerous forward, beat two Slough defenders before hitting the ball across the goal but with nobody to push it home. Bayer almost put into his own net before hooking the ball clear.

On the half hour, Slough's efforts were rewarded; defender Vigar and keeper Cox got in a muddle when Brown put through a well-measured pass and Anthony was on hand to hit home goal number one.

Just on half time Carshalton could well have levelled the score, but McDermott hastily headed the ball straight to Spittle.

After the interval it was obvious that Carshalton were beginning to believe that they had the ability to do more than draw the game and after four minutes they were on level terms.

Again it was Crooks who swept through the Slough defence to cross the ball for McDermott to hook home past the helpless Spittle.

Within minutes Reardon almost put Slough ahead when he beat Cox with a fine effort, but full-back Scott cleared off the goal-line. In the 50th Davies was booked tor dissent and immediately tried to make up for this by firing in a great shot that Cox did well to finger away for a corner.

Slough were slowly conceding ground as the home side began to play better football and a Watts clearance off the goal-line in the 78th was the signal for the final Carshalton pressure, and it was only due to excellent saves by Spittle from Weary and Hedges and a clearance off the line by O'Sullivan that kept the scores level and a very relieved Slough were helped by the final whistle.
