Slough, deflated by the pre-match announcement that their captain and longest serving player Terry Reardon had resigned from the club and applied to join rivals Wycombe Wanderers, rose to the occasion and produced one of their finest wins to date, giving Harwich their biggest hiding of the season.

These four goals enabled Slough to collect their second £25 goal bonus of the season as well as three points.

It took Slough only 15 minutes to get into their stride when Turl cleared off the Slough line from a Springet header and they immediately broke on the right, with the cross being slotted into the back of the visitors net by Brown.

As Slough settled down, Ayling began to take on much of the responsibility that was Reardon's with Crosby wearing the seven shirt playing a defensive midfield role.

In the 35th, following two Slough corners, a header from Cannon was cleared off the Harwich line and Slough began to create openings in the usually reliable Harwich defence. One minute before half time the Harwich keeper punched the ball clear under pressure and Davies put in a clever shot but the crossbar got in the way.

The second half was only one minute old when Slough doubled their score, this time it was Ayling who fired home via defender Moffett. Three minutes later this time same defender saved a certain goal when he safely deflected a Davies shot.

The little Davies was producing some fine football at this time and the newly appointed captain seemed to revel in his new responsibilities. With Anthony back to his sparkling best Slough, although still lacking in certain departments, began to look better.

In the 53rd the two Welshmen combined to score a fine goal, Anthony raced through the centre, beating two defenders with ease, Davies ran clear on the left of the area to receive the ball and with all the time in the world hammered home goal number three.

Seven minutes later it was Anthony who joined the scoring with an early Christmas present from Harwich, Clark hit a bad back pass that looked as though it would go over for a corner, the keeper having committed himself was well out of the goal when Anthony raced through, caught the ball just before the byline and slotted home through a melee of hastily retreating Harwich defenders.

The rest of the game was a formality, Slough easily in control allowed the visitors little or no room and an Anthony effort in the 66th brought a great save from Armstrong.

With this sort of effort Slough could well be near to turning the corner.
