Three more points in the bag for Slough but it was only after a very hard struggle that the honours were won, both the goals being scored in the last three minutes of the game. The game was often boring but flared up when Nigel Howe, of Staines, was ordered off for kicking Crosby. Despite their handicap Staines defended strongly and probably thought they should have at least drawn. It was a tactical move by Slough in switching Turl into the attack and bringing Beyer back which brought the goals.
Staines started the game well and were easily the better side for the first 15 minutes, Slough without Anthony, on duty for Wales, had little to offer up front and the defence were left with a lot of work, but after the 15th minute, Slough began to get control of the ball.
In the 16th a cross by Turl was headed goalwards by Cannon but was cleared off the goal line. With the pressure building on the home rearguard they began to look uncertain and two very good chances were created but first Lane then skipper Davies were just a but too slow to push the ball into the net.
In the 43rd Staines had their best chance of the half when Vandenberg burst through but he was dispossessed by Cannon at the last moment. The ball went immediately to the other end and Davies (B.), with the goal at his mercy, shot wide.
The start of the second half saw a few minutes of Staines pressure but this slowly relaxed and the ball rarely left the midfield, in the 55th a clash between Crosby and Howe ended with the latter racing after the Slough player and kicking him in full view of referee Chester. No one raised any argument as Howe left for an early shower.
The game lost all its rhythm after this. Slough looked the better side but could not get the ball in the net despite two touches of brilliance from Terry Brown and it was not until the switch of Turl and Beyer that Slough brought the game back to life, in the 88th a long range effort from Turl crashed against the crossbar and Lane was on hand to push the rebound home.
Three minutes later, with injury time being played, Turl pushed the ball wide of the Staines defence to Lane, who shot wide of the keeper and Alan Davies
nipped in to push home number two.
