The first ever Isthmian League match to be played on a Sunday brought Slough Town their second biggest attendance of the season and plenty of entertainment for the 700 fans. Considering the dreary conditions this “gate” shows there is a public for Sunday morning senior football. The result of the game from the Slough point of view was not so satisfactory as two vital league points were dropped.
Slough badly missed the solid performance of Micky Cannon and Tim Turl in defence and it was two bad defensive errors that had them in arrears twice in the first half. As they had to clear off their goal-line twice with Peter Spittle beaten both times, Slough can perhaps count themselves a little lucky not to have dropped all three points, although over the ninety minutes a draw was a fair result.
The best thing about the Slough display was the promising debut of David Kemp, he scored a fine goal and added a good deal of fire to a hitherto lethargic attack.
Most of the early action was in the Slough goalmouth, in the seventh minute Barrie Davies blocked a shot from the lively Atkins on the line, but one minute later Slough's luck ran out when a long Chesham throw from the right was flicked on and centre back Johnston, completely unmarked, headed past Spittle to make it 0-1.
Four minutes later Slough were level. Alan Ayling, having the sort of game he will want to forget, crossed low into the Chesham area into a packed defence and the ball was deflected into the net off Taylor.
Despite the muddy conditions the play was very fast, switching quickly from end to end and in the 18th minute Slough took the lead. A free kick from Brendan O'Sullivan found Kemp and the new boy sent a fine glancing header into the roof of the net.
This goal should have been the signal for Slough to take command, but instead, they found themselves 3-2 down at half-time. In the 41st minute Chesham gained a corner on the right. They took it short and Atkins fired the ball into the far top corner of the goal.
Right on half-time slack marking by the Slough defence let Chesham in again for their third goal, a corner on the left was cleared off the line for yet another corner and from this Johnston ran in unmarked to head his second goal.
The second half was only three minutes old when Slough got back on level terms, Terry Brown once again showing good control but little speed, burst down the middle and slipped the ball to Alan Davies who scored a good goal.
Once again this should have signalled a wave of Slough pressure, but Chesham were far from finished and twice Spittle had to make daring saves at the feet of advancing forwards.
In the 69th minute both sides brought on their substitutes, Lane replacing Ayling for Slough, with Kemp moving back into midfield. Still play switched from end to end, with Brown having a good header tipped over for a corner, while at the other end two runs by Atkins brought Spittle into action.
