FA Amateur Cup

Before a splendid crowd of close on 1,500 Slough Town moved on to the next stage of the Amateur Cup on Sunday morning when they beat Oxford City by the only goal at the Stadium in the replay of the previous Saturday’s drawn game at Oxford. It was a hard tough game with Oxford adopting strong arm tactics which earned them three bookings to add to the three they collected in the first game. Anthony, Slough's Welsh international scored the all important goal in the 47th minute.
It was not until the 14th minute that Slough made any impact on the Oxford goal when Anthony had a good shot saved, but with most of the play in midfield hard tackling by the visitors began to cause rumbling in the crowd, rumbling that changed to cheers in the 15th minute when Sinnot was booked for a foul. In the 20th Slough should have opened the scoring when first Anthony then Brown had the Oxford goal at their mercy but with the ball sticking in the muddy area both players only half connected and the ball was cleared away. Two minutes later Tomkins was booked for the second time in a week for a foul on Anthony. This booking took a lot of the steam out of the visitors and the Slough players found themselves with more time and room and the Oxford goal came under great pressure.
Two minutes into the second half came the only goal of the game, Brown received the ball inside his own half on the left flank and make a tremendous run down the wing, skilfully evading tackles and controlling the ball as though it was attached to his boot until he reached the Oxford byline where he crossed low into the area, Lane missed the ball but Anthony was on hand to control and volley it just inside the near post.
After this Oxford threw everything forward and it was Slough's turn to defend, and in the 49th Spittle had to race out of his area to clear the ball away.
Under pressure the Slough defence were outstanding, with Cannon and Turl looking in a class above everyone else. Following a scramble in the Slough goalmouth in the 53rd minute Atherton became the third Oxford player to go into Mr Ackrills book. Slough were now confined to breakaways and in the 56th Davies put Brown away only for the latter to hit the ball the wrong side of the upright.
Slough got back on top on the hour and had a good shot cleared off the Oxford line in the 63rd but in the 67th it was a scramble in the mud at the Slough end that caused a lot of trouble. Oxford substituted Marcham for Atherton in the 68th but this made little difference to their tactical play.
