FA Amateur Cup
Slough are out of the Amateur Cup, beaten by a goal scored three minutes from time at Portland Park, Ashington, on Saturday, when they only had ten players on the field. John Beyer, who came into the side at the last minute, having been ordered off for arguing with the referee. The gate of 1,900 was the largest the Northumberland side have had for years but it was considerably swollen by North Shields supporters who went to have a look at the side their club will meet in the next round.

With Trevor Williams ruled out by the Football Association as ineligible and Roy Davies failing a fitness test, Roy Sleap had to reshuffle his team. Slough had made the long journey by road staying overnight at Newcastle.

The opening exchanges saw Slough going forward but their final attacks lacked sting and goalkeeper Nesbitt had no real problems. At the other end Spittle failed to collect an overhead kick and the ball ran to Wright who shot over the bar when well placed. The Slough defence was not too steady at this period and Pringle missed an open goal.

Spittle did not seem too happy with the high cross balls which Ashington were pumping over but Slough survived then Anthony and Brown went close with good shots and Lane had a golden opportunity when Brown put him clean through but he blasted the ball over the bar. A lot of needle was creeping into the game and free-kick after free-kick was awarded for petty fouls.

In the second half Slough made all out attacks to try and snatch the lead with Anthony, Lane and Brown all having a go but the Ashington defence was solid and Nesbitt was in brilliant form.

Ritchie, of Ashington, had his name taken for a foul on Anthony, and soon after this came the incident which led to Beyer being sent to the dressing room. Wright went into a strong challenge on Spittle and Beyer rushed up and aimed a kick at Wright which missed. Referee Mapp, of Crook, called Beyer over and appeared to be going to book him but the Slough player argued and was ordered off leaving Slough to battle for the last 15 minutes a player short.

Slough were now really up against it and Ashington heaped on the pressure but missed many chances before they got the all important goal in the 87th minute. It was a foul which gave the home team a free-kick, the ball being directed to Wright who, 15 vards out, headed a picture goal with Spittle left helpless. Slough had fought bravely but in many ways contributed to their own defeat.
