For the second week in succession Slough scraped home by the only goal of the game, yet again from the penalty spot by courtesy of Tim Turl and again against opposition that was far below their own standard. Abingdon came to Slough expecting to lose and left amazed that they had been cheated of a replay by a highly debatable penalty in the 87th minute. This first ever Berks and Bucks cup tie on the Stadium ground on a Sunday morning attracted nearly 600 spectators.

Slough should never have allowed the game to go on for so long without scoring. They were easily the better side, even allowing for the fact that they rarely broke into a sweat, and the Abingdon keeper, King, must have thought the Slough strikers very benevolent as they fired shot after shot straight into his arms.

Despite the slack passing and poor marking, the game was played almost exclusively in the visitors’ half. Slough gained their first corner in the tenth minute, Brown turning the Abingdon defence and shooting just wide. A shot by Lane was saved in the 32nd minute, and a Williams’ inswinging corner was headed against the Abingdon crossbar. Crosby swept through the visitors’ defence, but was brought down before he could get his shot in. It was all Slough, but no goal came.

The second half was to produce even more frustration for the Slough supporters in the massed crowd of 594. A Williams corner in the 48th curved straight into the goal but an infringement denied Slough.

Seven minutes later the ball was there again but this time Brown was censured for a foul and that was the end of the second half revival. In the 70th minute Abingdon substituted Caffell for Marks, a move that did nothing more to the game than cause a stoppage, and this was followed by Slough’s substitution in the 72nd minute and subsequent tactical moves that had more than a few people confused.

Lane, a striker, came off to be replaced by midfield man Barrie Davies, Crosby dropped back from midfield to full-back, and Tim Turl, probably the best of the Slough players on view, was pushed up front where for 28 minutes he managed to almost disappear from the game. That is until the 87th minute when with the dwindling crowd dreading the-expected extra time, the penalty was awarded and converted by Turl.
