Slough struck top form in this game at Hampton on Saturday and the only puzzle is why they did not score more goals. Hampton have been putting on a giant-killing act in recent weeks and only seven days earlier beat promotion challenging Tilbury, but Slough were their masters at every department of the game. The all-important goal was scored in the 47th minute by Alan Davies. This fine victory keeps the Town right up with the leaders and considerably enhances their chances of finishing runners-up to Dagenham.

Slough were without O'Sullivan, who is injured, and Brown, whose absence was a bit of a mystery. Cosby started off as a front runner but soon dropped back into defence and Turl went into attack. Turl, so positive in defence, lost most of his authority up front and by his standards had a quiet day.

After only three minutes a clash between Williams and Hampton's centre player Minor, resulted in both trainers racing into action. Williams recovered but Minor had to retire and was replaced by Ash. In the eighth minute Slough made their first goal attempt when Turl lobbed the ball over the bar when looking very dangerous. Davies made ground on the left and crossed for Anthony to head wide of the ‘keeper, but Markham cleared off the line.

Slough maintained this kind of pressure and Cannon saw a very hot shot saved, while on another occasion Williams went close. At the other end Spittle was almost a spectator.

After the break Slough surged forward and within two minutes were a goal up. Williams pushed the ball to Davies who raced ahead and hit a 20-yard shot which flew into the net via an upright. Four minutes later a good effort from Kemp crashed against the crossbar, but from this point the high standard of play fell away as Hampton set about stopping Slough without offering any constructive attack themselves.

Slough seemed content with their one goal advantage and slowed their pace. It was not until the dying seconds that the Town again came close to scoring and then Anthony raced through, but his final effort was smartly saved by Page.

It was a well deserved win for Slough but they really should have had more goals to show for their afternoon's display.
