Slough kept their promotion challenge very much alive on Saturday, when they well and truly beat Hertford Town, fellow contenders for honours, at Slough Stadium. Second half goals by Turl and Anthony landed the three points at stake but the Herts side can still pip the Rebels as they have four games in hand and are eight points in arrears. Tilbury, beaten again on Saturday look to have dropped out of the race but Horsham could get up to join the leaders in a grand stand finish.
Once again Turl, wearing the no. 2 shirt moved up into the forward line and he looked a more settled player and gave the visiting defence a lot of trouble.
Slough took a while to settle down and Hertford's constant use of the offside trap made good football difficult but it soon became apparent that the Rebels were the better side and they should have gone ahead after 18 minutes when Turl raced clear from a pass by Kemp and crossed the ball low across the goalmouth but the incoming Williams, with the goal at his mercy miskicked and the ball was cleared.
Four minutes later we had almost a repeat when Turl crossed again and this time it was Kemps turn to miskick in front of goal.
After the interval Slough swept the Hertford players back and gained three corners on the trot, then in the 52nd minute Kemp put a defence splitting pass through and Turl raced in to make it 1-0.
An immediate substitution by Hertford did them no good at all and Kemp almost increased the lead in the 65th minute but his final shot was well saved. Hertford had their best chance of the game when Key fired in a good effort which was punched out by Spittle, Heron latched onto the clearance but Spittle raced out and deflected the shot.
After this it was all Slough and the ever improving Kemp put Anthony away in the 85th minute for the little Welsh winger to slot home number two.
After this Hertford gave up and Anthony had a great shot well saved and Barrie Davies made a fine run in the last minute before crashing the ball against the upright.
