Maidenhead after their triumph against Dagenham the previous week, went to Slough with high hopes of reversing the 1-0 Isthmian League defeat inflicted on them at York Rd earlier this season. But whatever hopes they had quickly faded after only seven minutes when Vince Faulkner, as in the first
match, brought down his former colleague Kemp and referee Phillips had no hesitation in awarding a penalty.
Turl stepped up to calmly place the ball past Whitlock and from that moment Slough never seemed in any trouble of losing against a Maidenhead side that lacked both ideas and determination.
Maidenhead in the whole game could only muster one direct shot of any note at goal and that was comfortably dealt with by Spittle.
For most of the game they were contesting midfield, and despite having superiority in numbers, Maidenhead could never match the skill and speed of Anthony, Williams and Barry Davies. Although Slough never threatened to overrun the Magpies, they did nevertheless create enough chances to win by a comfortable margin.
Welsh international Geoff Anthony was perilously close with a header after 13 minutes which had Whitlock scurrying across his goal to save but it went just past the post.
Slough remained fairly subdued for the remainder of the first half occasionally breaking forward but never really penetrating a stubborn Maidenhead defence. Then, in injury time, Anthony burst through the Magpies defence and appeared to mishit a cross; Kemp meanwhile had moved round on the blind side of the defence and just beat the oncoming Whitlock to the ball to score from the narrowest of angles and gave Slough a comfortable two goal lead at the interval.
The second Half followed a similar pattern to the first, the ball staying chiefly in midfield with Slough showing more effort and determination than Maidenhead.
In the 47th minte Barry Davies had a fierce shot saved by Whitlock at the second attempt, and was again close in the 63rd minute when he was just wide following a free kick
Williams narrowly missed the target with a snap shot in the 70th minute but throughout the game there was little goalmouth action to enthuse over. Maidenhead's forwards, without the support of Chatterton, lacked any sort of penetration and only Woolley and Wright suggested that they could
salvage something out of the game for the Magpies.
Kemp, who had been enjoying a fine game against his former club, brought out another good save from Whitlock and Slough finally made sure of the game and a £25 bonus when they scored in the 82nd minute. Turl, who was playing as an extra forward for most of the game, took advantage of a mix-up between Whitlock and Faulkner to record his second goal of the afternoon.
Many Maidenhead supporters could be seen drifting away long before this goal was scored being frustrated at the lack of penetration and entertainment. It was a game Maidenhead will quickly want to forget, having given one of their worst performances of the season in a colourless display of poor passing and making several mistakes at the back.
It was left to Cannon, Slough's solid centre back to create Maidenhead's best effort of the day. In injury time, while under pressure from Kiely, he back-headed onto his own bar the ball eventually going over for a corner. Maidenhead's despair was typified in the 77th minute by Shepherd, who with only the goalkeeper to beat from eight yards missed and spent the rest of the game hobbling with a stubbed toe. How fortunes can change in a week.
