League
After playing their first three games in the top division of the Rothman-Isthmian League, Slough have not a single point and only one goal to show for their efforts but they have on each occasion served up fast and attractive football.
On Saturday, at Tooting they were holding the home team at 1-1 and looked good for a draw but a defensive blunder ten minutes from the end cost them the vital goal. David Kemp was Slough’s scorer.
Slough, had Chatterton their last weeks signing in their party but Roy Sleap kept him on the substitutes bench until the second half and then he replaced A. Davies but he hardly looked match fit.
The first half was full of entertaining football, Tooting like so many of the Isthmian clubs were busy with signing on forms during the summer and have half a dozen newcomers. Both teams had good chances but sound defensive work kept the score sheet blank until half time. Spittle made three very good saves when strong Tooting attacks looked dangerous.
The second half saw Tooting make the break through scoring a well taken goal but Slough were not in arrears for long. After some smart work on the edge of the box Kemp got the ball and snatched a well deserved equaliser.
After going close to taking the lead Slough were forced back but they seemed capable of holding on to a draw but ten minutes from the end disaster overtook them. Tooting began a run on the wing and with the Slough defenders hesitating to make the tackle the ball was taken down to the dead ball line and then crossed for a well placed forward to jump and head the winning goal.
It was a fatal mistake to let the advancing player get right down the field to be in a position to cross the ball. This snap goal cost Slough the game, try as they would a second equalising goal was beyond them.
A lot of the Slough football was of high standard with Turl, Williams and Cannon all prominent in defence and Kemp and Anthony the most dangerous up front players.
