Slough won their first match in the Premier Section of the Rothmans Isthmian League on Tuesday evening at Church Road, Hayes, by two goals to nil. Both goals were scored in the second half through Chatterton and Kemp. Slough showed greatly improved form on their display at Oxford last week and were well deserved winners.

Both sides played a lot of good football, but Slough definitely had the edge in front of goal. Slough included young Morgan, as Cannon was not available, but he found the pace and experience of Hayes difficult to cope with and after 25 minutes Roy Sleap pulled him off and Brendan O'Sullivan took his place.

Hayes were dangerous in these early stages and Spittle distinguished himself on several occasions, while Turl was a tower of strength. Slough slowly began to string their passes together and as the half advanced it became a very even struggle with first one side and then the other looking dangerous. Slough hit a post when a goal looked certain.

The interval arrived with the score sheet blank, but it was not long after the restart that Slough began to get on top, they were mounting their attacks with precision and were particularly dangerous on the right flank. It was from a Turl run down the right and a quick cross that the first goal was scored, but the ball was only got into the net by Chatterton after it had bobbed about near the goal-line for quite a time.

This goal worked wonders for the Rebels — they re-doubled their efforts and Hayes were time and time again forced back. Fifteen minutes from the end Slough clinched the issue and again it was smart work by Turl which led to a crisp cross and Kemp collecting drove in a fine goal.

In the closing minutes Slough went close to going further ahead, playing some fine football.
