Slough Town gained more valuable points in the Rothman-Isthmian League on Saturday, when they defeated Walton and Hersham at Stompond Lane by two clear goals and the hero was Richard Wilkes, the club's latest signing from Cheltenham the Southern League club.
If Wilkes is the answer to the Town’s striker problem then they should continue to make headway in the table for it has been the lack of penetration in front of goal which has been holding them up.
Two seasons ago these clubs met in the Amateur Cup final at Wembley and were among the top amateur teams in the country, on Saturday, only three of players who appeared at Wembley were on view, Geoff Anthony, and Mick Chatterton were the Slough survivors and Russell Perkins of Walton.
Walton have fallen even further from the top flight than Slough and on this form are going to find it hard to avoid relegation. Slough played with far more bite and skill than their opponents and were worthy winners.
After 12 minutes Walton had a golden opportunity to score when a bad back pass saw Allen with only Spittle to beat but the keeper dived and took the ball off Allen's feet and then Harrison had a second chance but Turl cleared off the line.
Dave Kemp had bad luck for Slough, twice hitting the woodwork and then after 20 minutes Wilkes made the break through when he beat Perry with a fine shot following good work by Boyer and O'Sullivan following a corner.
In the 35th minute Underwood made a long throw in and Kemp headed the ball on Wilkes who flicked it into the net.
In the second half Slough were on top and only good work by ex-Windsor keeper Perry stopped shots from Turl, Cannon, Williams and Chatterton.
