It was a thrill a minute football at Woking on Saturday, when Slough Town turned in their best performance to date and were well worth their 3-3 draw. This was what the football spectators pay their money for, end to end play, plenty of goalmouth excitement and six goals scored. If the Town can keep this form up they will have no worries about gaining a respectable position in the Rothmans-Isthmian League table.

Prospects of good football looked remote when the Woking ground staff had to fork the rain covered pitch before play could begin, but right from the start the slippery surface added to the general excitement.

Slough were one up after only seven minutes and could well have added another two before the home side got back on level terms in the 21st minute. Despite close calls at both ends the half time score remained at 1-1 but Woking raced into the lead in the second half with two devastating goals in a three minute period and Slough looked to be in real trouble.

However they did not give up and slowly asserted themselves making it three-two in the 62nd and getting onto equal terms in the 76th. The last 14 minutes belonged to Slough but they were unable to get the all important goal.

Slough started well pressurising the Woking defence and after only seven minutes Wilkes laid on a perfect pass for Kemp to put Slough one up. A minute later a shot from Wilkes was deflected for a corner by Hill and from the corner keeper Collyer managed to deflect a shot from Anthony for ex-Slough full back Micky Bell to head off the line. As the home team settled down they got more into the game and their big forwards began to give the Slough rearguard a tough time.

A fine save by Spittle from Cheesman in the 19th was followed by the first Woking goal two minutes later, Bell touched a free kick to Cooper who crossed the ball high into the Slough area for Grondona to outjump the Slough defence and head past Spittle.

Immediately from the restart Chatterton raced clear and had a powerful shot parried by Collyer, Kemp racing in was just foiled by a brave diving save from the Woking keeper.

The second half started well for Slough but the home side beginning to look better on the drying surface stopped the visitors in their tracks with a two goal burst in three minutes. The first in the 52nd minute came again from a free kick Woozley crossed for Waughan to head home.

Following a good Kemp attempt at the other end play immediately returned to the Slough area and Grondona got his second and Woking’s third with a well taken shot from just outside the area following a defensive mix-up by Slough.

A further two minutes and it could have been 4-1 when Oran again showing the home side’s aerial superiority outjumped the Slough defence to force a brilliant fingertip save from Spittle. Slough were not dismayed and slowly fought back until they made it 3-2 in the 62nd minute.

Anthony raced clear on the right and hit the ball across for Kemp to race in and hammer home giving Collyer no chance.

Slough were now in charge but the dangerous Grondona should have settled the result in the 67th when he fired a good effort from point blank range but Spittle was equal to the challenge and turned the ball away.

A fine headed effort from Kemp was well saved in the 71st and five minutes later Slough were on level terms, Anthony crossed the ball deep into the Woking area and Collyer could only punch the ball into the path of the lurking Chatterton who calmly picked his spot before smashing the ball into the back of the net.

The final ten minutes saw Slough doing most of the pressing gaining five corners but unable to get the all important goal.
