After giving an impressive display of fast attacking football in the first half and crossing over with a two goal lead Slough slumped against Kingstonian at York Road, Maidenhead on Tuesday evening and nearly threw the game away.
A last minute goal by Beyer enabled Slough to take maximum points after the two goal advantage. These “home’” games of Slough played on a borrowed pitch are proving very costly to the club for the grounds on which they are played have to be paid for and hiring costs are not cheap.
The “gates’’ naturally do not reach anything like the figures if the games were played in Slough. On Tuesday, a dismal evening, the attendance was very sparse and the match must have cost the club money.
Slough played the same team as lost to Bishops Stortford on Saturday and their first half display was very encouraging with attack after attack being built up following mid-field superiority.
In the 19th minute Slough’s good work was rewarded when Chatterton put Kemp through and the teams top scorer made no mistake.
Just now the K's defence was in a sorry state of confusion and in the 21st minute from a free kick not far out of the box Chatterton drove the ball round the wall and under the diving Bath's body into the back of the net.
Crossing over two up was very satisfactory but no more than a very attractive Slough team deserved but then came a very different story in the second half.
It was hard to believe it was the same Slough team in the second period, gone was the precision and sharp attacking moves, a situation it did not take Kingstonians long to grasp.
In the 56th minute Kelsall took a free kick from just outside the penalty area and Spittle challenged by Clark punched the ball into his own net.
When Casey squared the account in the 78th minute following slack marking and bad positioning by Slough it looked as if the Rebels had thrown the game away. It was not until the 89th minute that O'Sullivan crossed the ball and in a general mix-up Beyer slid it over the line for the winning goal.
