Once again Slough flattered only to deceive in their home Isthmian League game played against Barking on the hired Kingstonian ground on Saturday. After scoring first through Dave Kemp they fell to pieces and allowed a none-too-impressive Barking team to score twice in the last quarter of an hour and snatch victory.
It was another case of points thrown away by Town and the loyal supporters who made the 17-mile trek to Richmond Road must have been bitterly disappointed. Micky Cannon was injured during the game and O'Sullivan came on as substitute, while young East kept his place in defence, but the omission of Underwood was rather surprising.
Alan Davies came in for a lot of barracking from the disappointed Slough fans, but he was not more to blame for the defeat than several others both in defence and attack.
Team manager Roy Sleap said after the game: “The whole team gave a terrible performance and I think the crowd gave Davies too much stick.”
Slough started brightly with Kemp and Chatterton soon having the Barking defence in trouble and Kemp had a good chance when he headed wide following a Williams corner. Williams was again in the limelight when he stopped a very dangerous Barking run by the old Chelsea player Joe Fascione.
Four minutes from half-time Cannon fell badly in trying to stop Varney and the knee injury he sustained led to his being called off and O'Sullivan going on at full-back with Beyer moving up to mid-field.
Slough started the second half in great style and were a goal up in the first minute. Another nicely-flighted Williams corner was missed by East, but the ball carried on to Kemp who steered it into the net with his head.
Town should have made it two when Chatterton burst through but his final shot, a real piledriver, went inches wide and the Barking defenders breathed a sigh of relief. Turl had a shot cleared off the line and Kemp's follow up was blocked by Kitson.
It was round about this stage that Slough started to slow down and after Barking had brought on their substitute for Varney the game took a definite swing in the Essex team's favour.
After O'Sullivan had conceded a corner, Barking equalised in the 76th minute, Burton heading on to Walters who slammed the ball past Spittle. Inside another couple of minutes Barking were in front, Burton again winning the ball in the air, headed down for Whittle to beat Spittle from close range.
Barking had defender Amerocas off injured for a time and when he did return he could only hobble, but Slough could not take advantage of this situation. Chatterton was heavily brought down in the box but the referee refused Slough’s claims for a penalty.
