FA Cup
Slough are through to the first round proper of the FA Cup and will meet Brentford at home in the next stage of the competition on Saturday, November 23. Saturday's success over Sutton United by a single goal was an historic occasion as it marked the opening of Town’s new ground, Wexham Park.
The all important goal was scored by Anthony in the 67th minute following good build up work by Kemp.
A pleasing feature of the game was the good show put up by Slough youngsters, East and Burbridge, who with experience should become first class players.
It was up front Slough showed their biggest improvement, with Burbidge and Williams fighting for every ball, while Anthony had a fine game and Chatterton led the United defence a merry dance. Kemp was shadowed from first to last by Powell but he still found the opportunity to keep the Sutton keeper busy.
The first half honours went to Sutton, Slough taking a long time to settle down on their new ground. Ives got the ball into the Slough net after nine minutes but was ruled offside.
It seemed Sutton must score but Slough somehow survived with Spittle bringing off several good saves. Kemp, well watched by Powell had a quiet first half but just before half-time he eluded his shadow and crossed the ball but no Slough player was up to take advantage of a gilt edged chance.
Williams received a lecture from the referee after he tore into the Sutton keeper and knocked him out.
The second-half started with Sutton gaining the first corner of the game and then came another corner from which Preston missed an open goal with his head. Slough slowly got back into the game and in the 59th minute they should have had a penalty for hands.
Slough should have scored when Anthony blasted goalwards and the ball spun off the keeper's feet for a corner. This Town pressure was paying dividends, the Sutton defenders were getting desperate and in the 67th minute Burbridge lobbed the ball into the goalmouth, Kemp failed to collect the pass and Anthony finally hammered it home.
Sutton, threw everything into attack and Slough were very relieved to hear the final whistle.
