FA Trophy
Slough Town after holding the powerful Dagenham side in the first half of this FA Trophy match at Dagenham, faded badly in the second 45 minutes and at the end were three goals down.
The result hardly does the Town justice for they fought very hard and at times played some attractive football but against so polished a defence as the home team had to offer they could not score goals.
Despite the long journey and the fact that supporters of Slough have been travelling almost every Saturday since mid-August the faithful following were there lending vocal support to urge the Rebels on.
During the week Dagenham had been signing several new players including a couple from Bishops Stortford and another from Enfield.
Slough had their usual team on duty and in the early stages they set up a number of attacks which certainly worried the Essex team’s defence.
When Dagenham did get their forward line moving they were extremely dangerous and the Slough defenders did well to contain them.
The home team broke very fast, using quick passes to the wings to set up attacks but time and again their accurate crosses were cut out by Turl and co, while Spittle seemed to be tackling high and low balls with equal confidence.
At the other end of the field Slough had their moments and they certainly went very close without having just that extra bite to round off the moves by putting the ball away.
In the second half Dagenham looked sharper and went into all out attack from the start. Slough looked strong enough to hold these speedy raids until the defence got itself in a tangle which ended in the Daggers getting goal number one.
This goal which Slough had held off for so long acted like a tonic to the home team but seemed to make Town abandon hope of scoring themselves.
Dagenham pressurised the Slough defence for long periods and it was not surprising they added two more goals. The visitors managed to counter attack but they could not break down a very solid Daggers rearguard. This defeat was a blow to Slough for it meant that on successive Saturdays they have been knocked out of the National cups.
Dagenham now visit Witney in the next round. The Oxfordshire club dismissed Staines from the competition on Saturday.
