Slough Town collected a bonus of £40 for this three-goal win over bottom of the league Bromley, the first of these awards to come Slough’s way this season. The award and valuable points gained apart, this was not one of Slough’s best performances of the season.
Two of the goals came from the penalty spot with Tim Turl steering the ball home on each occasion: while the other goal was credited to Brown. The attendance of over 600 was satisfactory on a cold, dull December day.
Slough lacked the services of Anthony and Malley with Brown and Smith deputising. This was Slough’s first league game on Wexham Park, and the result was extremely good even if its execution was disappointing to some critics
The opening exchanges were far from exciting but the game was set alight with two goals in 90 seconds. Kemp put Wilks away after 20 minutes and outpacing the defenders Wilks crossed the ball back to Kemp whose fierce drive was blocked. Brown latched on to the rebound and slotted home from an awkward angle.
In the next minute Kemp raced through and way pulled back in the box but referee Martin, often late with his decisions, allowed Kemp to crash the ball against the crossbar before awarding a penalty. Turl was called up to take the kick and made no mistake.
Slough continued to call the tune but when Bromley did get going they found Spittle having one of his uncertain days and had they had any finishing power goals most certainty would have come their way.
Just before half-time Kemp volleyed the ball into the net but was adjudged offside. Bromley’s Smith was injured and carried off and Neary came on as substitute.
The second half started with Slough still on the attack but all their shots were saved or resulted in near misses and some of the disgruntled crowd called for goals but it was not until the last minute that the third goal was scored, Williams was brought down as he was going through and from
the penalty spot Turl again obliged.
