Rebels Into Third
Slough moved into third place on Tuesday night, but manager Alan Davies said later: "Things can only get better. “
For again, his side didn't play well, but picked up another three points to record their fifth win in six games.
"We didn't play that well in the first half and in the e second, it wasn't very good at e all," he said. "Hopefully, things can only get better.”
The lowest crowd of the season were recorded with precious little for braving the bitterly cold evening. The only goal came from a familiar set piece. This time though, it was Ken Wilson who nodded in Keith White's near post corner in the 33rd minute.
Even that came about by Nick Walker fortuitously, as the ball was kicked into touch from Davis after he had received it in an obvious offside position. It was only Slough's second shot at goal and there was only two more after that.
In between, the Rebels’ FA Trophy conquerors indicated just why Walthamstow have scored fewer goals and only Yeovil have conceded more in the Premier Division this season.
They operated an obviously, oft-practiced offside trap and when they carved out goalscoring opportunities, showed a staggering ineptitude. Yet Slough certainly lived dangerously in the second period.
After Davis shot into the side-netting, Trevor Bunting twice saved well as his defence was caught sleeping. Then Samson Olaleye put the ball out of the ground when he only had the 'keeper to beat in the miss of the night if not the season. Knight cleared off the line and there was only one team who looked like scoring.
But fortunately for the Rebels, Morgan and Dunne couldn't hit the target on a night when very few of the home 11 enhanced their reputations. “The players know themselves they can do better," said Davies.
