Hercules labours but Rebels demolish the lame Ducks
Slough pulled out all the stops on Tuesday night to beat Berks and Bucks Cup rivals Aylesbury United 2-0.
Despite last minute team changes, Slough pulled out all the stops on Tuesday night to beat Berks and Bucks Cup rivals Aylesbury United 2-0. The team was without top striker Tommy Langley who is suffering from a groin injury, and five other players were missing due to illness and other fixtures.
After an even opening ten minutes, over zealous tackling got the Ducks into trouble when Robert Smith brought down Slough's Mark Hill and Slough were awarded a penalty. The shot was taken by Trevor How who planted the ball cleanly in the right-hand-side of the net to give the Rebels an early lead. Aylesbury, who beat Slough 1-0 last time they met in the Vauxhall League, came back into the action and worried goal keeper Trevor Bunting for the first time when Les Lawrence took a shot which went wide.
The second goal of the match came in the 26th minute when a Mark Adams cross found Neal Stanley who blasted the ball past goalie Tim Garner. The Rebels' most worrying time was a self-inflicted trauma — Mark Mallinson over hitting a back pass — but Tony Knight capped a fine performance by sliding in to save Mallinson further embarassment. Slough manager Alan Davies said: "We are of course very pleased with this win. Aylesbury are a very strong side."
