Railwaymen Well Beaten
Slough further improved their Spartan League record last Saturday, a large crowd seeing them beat the Great Western Railway at the Dolphin by 7 goals to 1. Slough were much the cleverer side and in view of the coming Cup tie, took things easily, Glover was resting an injured ankle and his place was taken in the Slough eleven by C. J. Johnson.
Playing with the wind in the first half, the Railway men showed better form than their League record suggested them capable, and Dale was forced to make one astonishing save early on. After 10 minutes play Grant centred well for Norris to head in. The ball was charged down, but Payne received to score a good goal.
Three times was Baldwin put through but he had no luck with his shots. Slade, the visiting right back, had to go off for attention to an injury and when he resumed he played on the right wing. After 25 minutes Norris centred from the left and Jones, a visiting defender, tried to clear but saw the ball hit the crossbar and bounce down the referee awarding a goal to Slough.
Payne and Norris quickly added goals for Slough in the second half. Then Gallop netted from a penalty kick. But the spot kick was ordered to be retaken and this time Wright saved Gallop's shot. However, Norris, Payne and Baldwin added further goals for Slough before the final whistle - Lewis netting for the visitors in a desperate rally.
