Slough defeated by table-toppers Worthing

Slough fall to a heavy defeat at home to early table-toppers Worthing.

On a difficult evening for Scott Davies’ men, the Rebels fell to a 4-1 defeat at home to top of the table Worthing, writes Freddie Gatrell.

It was a fine evening for football at Arbour Park, with the mood largely positive prior to the match. The match began fairly open, with chances falling to both teams.

Despite early pressure from Slough, Worthing struck first as a hopeful long ball caught the Slough defensive line by surprise, with Worthing striker, on loan from Swindon Town, Ricky Agiuar having a largely simple task of beating Hubert Graczyk in the net, making it 1-0 to the visitors after 10 minutes.

Despite this early setback, Slough still looked increasingly likely to score early in the first half, with positive inroads being made in and around the opposition’s 18-yard box, with Johnny Goddard in particular causing the visitors problems.

This continued perseverance from the hosts was awarded only eight minutes later, as a brilliantly worked cross from Goddard was met by a rising Leon Chambers-Parillon, whose soaring header into the top right corner beat Worthing goalkeeper Rees, restoring parity for the hosts on the 18th minute mark.

No sooner than two minutes later, the visitors had another identical chance, bearing down on Slough’s goal with yet another long ball causing problems for the defensive back line. Agiuar clinically headed the ball over a helpless Graczyk to restore Worthing’s lead.

This instant reply from the visitors appeared to have taken the wind from the sails of Scott Davies’ side, as they were fighting an uphill battle. Frequent misplaced passes and unforced errors caused unnecessary stress for the Rebels throughout the rest of the match.

The second half started fairly positively for Slough as they managed to create some positive chances, with David Ogbonna continually impressing with his direct and positive wing play.

Unfortunately for the hosts, a speculative long-range effort in the 69th minute from Worthing’s Nick Wheeler cannoned off the back of Ollie Pearce, looping over a helpless Graczyk and creating a comfortable lead for the visitors.

Only eight minutes later, second half substitute Juan Luque’s direct run into the heart of the Slough defence was the nail in the coffin, as he finished calmly to make it 4-1.

A challenging night for the Rebels was made even worse when a harsh second yellow card for defender Tyrese Dyce resulted in the full-back receiving his marching orders, much to the disgust of the home support.

Next up for the Rebels is a trip to second-placed Weston-super-Mare this Saturday.
