Eight-goal thriller ends in defeat at Dover

Slough Town’s first competitive match of the 2026/27 season ended in an extraordinary eight-goal contest at the Megger Community Stadium, with Dover Athletic eventually edging out the Rebels 5-3 despite a remarkable second-half fightback.

After falling 3-0 behind in a difficult opening 45 minutes, Alan Julian’s side produced an outstanding response after the break, scoring three times in 11 minutes to level through Johnny Goddard and a Luke Holness double.

Dover regained the lead through Jack Bates with 12 minutes remaining before substitute Rolando Onu added a fifth in stoppage time to settle a match which had swung dramatically from one side to the other.

For Julian, the afternoon marked his return to competitive management after a period away from the dugout.

“I was four months out of the game and for that 90 minutes, the emotions that you feel, I was reminded of it very, very clearly and very sharply today,” he said. “I missed that, to be honest. I did miss that.”

The Rebels had been forced to wait an extra week for their campaign to begin following the postponement of their scheduled opening-day meeting with Ebbsfleet United, while Dover had already played – and lost 2-0 at Billericay Town – the previous weekend.

That extra week’s competitive experience appeared to tell during a frantic opening spell.

“I anticipated 15, 20 minutes maybe at the start of the game where they've obviously played a National League South game. We haven't,” Julian explained.

“We've got some players that have never played this level before and I think that caught us cold, if I'm being honest, the first 20 minutes of the game. It felt relentless.”

Dover took the lead in the 16th minute. A spell of good passing football earned the hosts a corner and Sonny Fish hooked the ball over his head, sending a looping effort beyond Josh McNamara.

The Whites doubled their advantage four minutes later after Slough failed to clear another corner. The ball bounced around inside the penalty area before a deflected effort was directed towards goal and Decarrey Sheriff’s header found the net.

Sheriff remained a constant threat and forced McNamara into a save with his feet in the 32nd minute.

Dover also repeatedly tested Slough from set pieces, an area Julian admitted had caused his side problems.

“You give away that many set plays, I think it's going to cause anybody problems,” he said. “To be honest, we gave away a lot. And did we deal with it? Obviously, no.”

Arthur Gregory was booked for bringing down Sheriff before Bates was also shown a yellow card.

Dover had a third goal ruled out for a foul shortly before half-time, but there was still time for another blow.

In the second minute of stoppage time, Bates delivered a low ball into the area and Sheriff clipped his finish underneath McNamara to score his second and give Dover a 3-0 lead at the interval.

Julian responded with a double change, introducing Shay Spencer and Chris Francis for Chris Regis and Brian Nelson.

The manager revealed that a late withdrawal on the morning of the match had contributed to the difficult first half, with Nelson having been asked to play at right-back.

“We needed to bolster the back line a little bit because we were really short there,” Julian said. “Obviously young Brian's played at right back for us first half today. He's not a right back.

“We had a late drop out this morning from a player that was supposed to be starting, so that threw a spanner in the works a little bit.”

Francis moved into left-back and Gregory switched to the right, with the changes helping to transform the Rebels after the restart.

Five minutes into the second half, Slough were awarded a penalty after Kyle Brooks went down inside the Dover area. Goddard confidently converted to make it 3-1.

The goal sparked a remarkable response.

Slough began dominating possession and playing with far greater purpose, and Holness reduced the deficit further in the 56th minute after good work from Jared Myers down the right.

Six minutes later, the comeback was complete.

Brooks’ pass took a deflection and fell for Holness, who struck underneath Mitch Walker to score his second and make it 3-3.

The Rebels had turned a three-goal deficit into parity inside 11 minutes.

“It’s not easy being 3-0 down at half-time away from home,” Julian said. “You can hide, you can shrink. We didn't. We puffed our chests out.

“We started getting on the ball. We started playing like, I say, how we want us to play and for half an hour I thought we were outstanding.”

Julian was particularly pleased with the character shown by a new-look squad containing several players experiencing National League South football for the first time.

“I’m going to hang on to that because that made me very, very, very proud,” he added. “That's what I asked for. That's what I got.”

The manager also praised Spencer, who was introduced at half-time and helped Slough gain greater control in midfield.

“Shay's obviously a player that I've liked for a little while, to be honest,” said Julian. “I think he can get on the ball and he can dictate play and he can make passes. And he wants the ball. He's brave.”

Slough made a further change when George Vorster replaced Myers in the 70th minute, but Dover gradually regained their attacking rhythm.

Two minutes later, Dover restored their lead.

Charles-Cook delivered into the penalty area and Bates was left unmarked at the back post, where he headed beyond McNamara to make it 4-3.

Slough continued to push, with Godlove Oppong replacing Holness and Louis Walsh coming on for Goddard.

A dangerous free kick was blocked in the closing stages and seven minutes of added time offered the Rebels further hope of another equaliser.

Instead, Dover found a decisive fifth.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time, a ball over the top caused confusion in the Slough defence and Onu reacted quickest, rounding McNamara before finishing into an empty net.

Dover saw out the remaining moments to secure their first three points of the season in front of an attendance of 711.

For Slough, the result was a frustrating start to the campaign after a second-half performance which had completely changed the complexion of the contest.

“You get a kick in the gut, which football can do to you,” Julian said. “And they go and score and then obviously we're chasing at the end.

“So, disappointed that we've lost after really showing so many ingredients to come back, but I'm going to stay positive with the ingredients and hopefully that rolls into Tuesday and we can get a positive result.”

Julian also believes the experience will provide valuable lessons for his young squad.

“The power of it, the physicality of it is something that you just can't talk about. You have to feel it. You have to go out there and feel it,” he said.

“You learn from every game you play, but in that 90 minutes, there was so much to learn.”

The Rebels were without Tarik Gidaree and Ruben Shakpoke in Kent, with Julian confirming that Gidaree had a personal issue while Shakpoke was not considered fit enough to risk.

“Ruben was 50/50 for today. He was close. But he just felt he was not quite there. So we didn't want to risk him,” he said.

Attention now turns to Tuesday night’s first home fixture of the season at Arbour Park.

The Slough boss has already watched Tuesday’s opponents and will now focus on preparing his side for their first home match.

“We'll turn our attentions to Tuesday now. We'll find the best way we can come up to win that game,” he said.

The Rebels ultimately left Dover empty-handed, but the character shown after half-time gives Julian plenty to build on as he begins his first season in charge.

“I am ever so proud of that second-half performance. I really, really am,” he said.

“I really hope [the supporters] can be proud and come back Tuesday to support us because we're going to need it.”
