Slough Town’s Emirates FA Cup campaign came to an end at the Second Round Qualifying stage as Chatham Town secured a 1-0 victory at Arbour Park.
Jack Lyons’ 16th-minute strike proved decisive in a match where the visitors made the stronger start and defended their lead effectively, despite the Rebels improving after the interval.
The result brings Slough’s FA Cup run to a close at this stage for the first time since the 2022/23 season.
The Rebels came into the tie looking to build on last Saturday’s first National League South victory of the season at AFC Totton, while Chatham arrived in Slough having won four of their opening eight matches in the Isthmian League Premier Division.
There was one change to Slough’s starting XI, with new signing Jordan Thomas handed his debut at right-back.
Chatham started brightly and put the Rebels under pressure during the opening stages, with much of the early play taking place in Slough territory.
The first effort of the afternoon came from Kyle Brooks after five minutes, although his strike was comfortably gathered by Chatham goalkeeper George Fardy.
The visitors continued to threaten from set pieces, forcing a number of early corners, and Slough were struggling to establish a foothold in the match.
That pressure eventually told in the 16th minute.
Jack Lyons picked up possession and struck a low drive across goal which found the bottom-left corner of Stevie Bausor’s net, giving Chatham a 1-0 lead.
Slough continued to find it difficult to cope with the physicality of the visitors, with another effort from the edge of the area taking a deflection before falling safely into Bausor’s hands.
There was frustration for the Rebels in the 28th minute when Godlove Oppong had his shirt pulled inside the Chatham penalty area before he had even received the ball, with the defender continuing to pull at his shirt, but no penalty was awarded.
The visitors were then forced into a stoppage in play when Fardy required treatment, with a significant amount of additional time subsequently indicated at the end of the first half.
Slough did improve as the interval approached.
Thomas tried his luck from outside the box in the 37th minute, but his low effort went wide, before the Rebels created their best opportunity of the opening period shortly before half time.
Jaiden Drakes-Thomas received the ball inside the area and curled an effort towards goal, but it drifted wide as Slough were unable to find an equaliser before the break.
The Rebels began the second half with greater purpose and looked to apply more pressure to the Chatham defence.
Slough made their first changes in the 61st minute, with Jared Myers and Luke Holness introduced for Thomas and Oppong.
Arthur Gregory followed shortly afterwards, replacing Kyrie Pierre, as the Rebels continued to search for a route back into the tie.
Johnny Goddard was then brought on for Ruben Shakpoke in the 72nd minute, while Chatham also made a series of changes as they looked to protect their advantage.
Brooks was booked in the 79th minute before Latrell Humphrey-Ewers replaced him a minute later.
Despite Slough’s increased effort, clear-cut opportunities remained difficult to come by during the second half.
The closest the Rebels came to levelling the score arrived in the 83rd minute.
Myers launched a throw-in into the Chatham penalty area, where Drakes-Thomas brought the ball under control before firing an effort towards goal. The ball struck the post and bounced away, denying Slough an equaliser.
Eight minutes of additional time were then signalled, giving the Rebels further opportunity to force an equaliser.
Slough continued to press and came close again late on.
Joe Morrison won a header on the edge of the penalty area and the ball fell to Holness, who attempted to drag it back across the six-yard box. Instead, his effort rolled into the waiting arms of Fardy.
That proved to be the final significant opportunity of the afternoon.
