About Joe

“Our Joe” joined the Club in 1945, and was well known in the district and in local football before he became a Rebel.

He previously played for Windsor Works and had already made a name for himself locally.

Born at South Shields, Co. Durham, in 1915, he learnt his early football with the Horton Colliery team and was given a trial at Newcastle.

On his first appearance he became a favourite with the crowd, and was one of the club's most popular players both with the team and spectators. He was a good footballer, good clubman and a first-class sportsman.
