Richard Teale

Bio

Richard Teale was one of the outstanding goalkeepers of Slough Town's successful sides of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

A Queens Park Rangers schoolboy, Teale joined Walton & Hersham in 1970 and established himself as one of the leading goalkeepers in non-League football. He starred in the Swans' FA Amateur Cup-winning side of 1973, helping Walton & Hersham defeat Slough Town 1-0 in the Wembley final.

His performances earned him a return to Queens Park Rangers as understudy to England international Phil Parkes. Although first-team opportunities were limited at Loftus Road, Teale went on to make Football League appearances for QPR, Fulham and Wimbledon before returning to non-League football.

Teale joined Slough Town in the summer of 1978 and quickly became a key figure between the posts. Over two spells with the Rebels he made 165 appearances and recorded 55 clean sheets, earning a reputation for his commanding presence, consistency and reliability.

His contribution was recognised in the club's Sportsman of the Year awards, finishing third in 1978/79 before winning the honour in both 1979/80 and 1980/81.

The highlight of his time at Slough came during the memorable 1980/81 season when the Rebels won the Isthmian League title, Isthmian League Cup and Berks & Bucks Senior Cup. Teale was an integral member of the side that delivered one of the most successful campaigns in the club's history.

Following his departure from Slough, he continued his non-League career with clubs including Staines Town and Carshalton Athletic before later serving as assistant manager at Staines.

Richard Teale remains fondly remembered as one of the finest goalkeepers of his era and a key member of Slough Town's 1980/81 championship-winning team.
