Season Opener Sees Rebels Win

Cup win for Rebels over Chesham sees Benevolent Cup progress.

The football season 1939/40 opened last Saturday, when a surprisingly good crowd saw Slough gain a deserved victory by the odd goal, over an excellent Chesham team. The form of the Slough eleven was most encouraging, and the play of the two new men, Gorman and Dando, give considerable satisfaction.

Within five minutes of the start Slough took the lead. Smith completely missed a centre from Mackenzie and, as the ball was entering the net, Park punched it out – Marshall scoring from the penalty kick. A magnificent piece of anticipation by Hartley prevented and equaliser shortly afterwards, but Goodman was soon able to put Chesham on terms. There was no further scoring before half-time, but both Hartley and Smith made excellent saves.

Slough were the better side in the second half, and both Mounteney and Dando had bad luck with good efforts, whilst Smith saved magnificently from Dando. A clever hook shot by Mackenzie, from a centre by Webb, put Slough ahead again, and, five minutes later, Dando broke through and shot past the outcoming goalkeeper to register Slough’s third. Five minutes from time, Beach scored a second goal for Chesham.
