The Rebels moved back to the top of the Athenian League table on Saturday when they defeated newly promoted Horn church by 3-1 at the Stadium. This was a good performance as the Essex team have made a good start to the season and were in fourth position in the league prior to this game.

With a sprinkling of last season's Cheshunt side in their line up Hornchurch proved to be a very enthusiastic side but they could not ally their hard work and effort to good finishing and that was why they did not get a share of the points. On chances they had Slough beaten but any side that blasts over an unprotected goal as often as the Hornchurch players did or hit the woodwork as they did cannot expect to take points away from Slough Stadium.

New signing John Ritchie made his debut for Slough in this game and came through well having a hand in all three, Slough goals, back from the injured list were Roger Day and Tony Amos al though the latter still has his arm in plaster, still on the injured list was Terry Reardon which will mean that once fit he and substitute Micky O'Sullivan will be fighting for places and perhaps we will see Mr Lawrence being able to field the same side for a number of games.

After a rather scrappy opening to the game, the seventh minute saw the very busy Hornchurch forwards open the scoring when from a corner on the left Sweeting headed the ball down in front of a static Slough defence for Aslet to prod home.

Slough's first real effort came from Day in the 13th minute when he hammered in a 25 yard shot which was well saved. But it was the visitors who were exerting the pressure and in the 17th Aslet again headed wide of Wolstenholme but Eaton headed of the line,

After a period of sustained Hornchurch pressure Slough began to get more into the game and after D'Arcy hit the upright in the 31st we saw the equaliser - Meade crossed from the right Ritchie headed diagonally, across the goal for Day to head in off the post.

The visitors made a further effort after this but apart from Meade who headed off the goal-line in the 37th the honours for the rest of the hall were shared.

After the break Drake fired in a terrific shot from outside the box which Wolstenholme left, it struck the underside of the bar and was cleared. Eight minutes later Slough were in front, a corner on the right by Amos headed home by new boy Ritchie for his debut goal.

After this Slough slowly assumed command and Hornchurch appeared to have run out of steam and when in the 80th minute Ritchie crossed from the right and the ball was only half cleared Cruse turned and hooked the ball home to make it 3-1 and ensure that the vision had no share in the day's spoils.
