Reigning Athenian champions, Dagenham, found themselves pushed back in their attempt to stay in the title race when Slough handed them a 2-0 drubbing at the Stadium on Saturday. This puts the Rebels clear at the top of the table and the Daggers temporarily out of the race, but Slough will now have to watch Leatherhead who are favourably placed. Over 1,400 watched the game. Amos in the 12th minute and Reid in the 71st were the Slough scorers.

This game produced some of the best football seen at Slough for some time, fast clever play from both sides, and although many Dagenham supporters pointed out that the Essex side had two very hard games coming up, the London Challenge Cup Final on Monday and Walsall in the FA Cup tomorrow (Saturday), it is very doubtful if the Dagenham players would accept a defeat from Slough in order to keep themselves fit for these games.

As it was the visitors did not look the side of last year, they were not as sound in defence or in attack but much of the credit for this must go to a Slough side that is beginning to play some very good football and did not give the red shirted Dagenham forwards the chance to settle in front of goal and they will also have to go a long way to find a side with strikers of the calibre of Amos and Ritchie who turned in the sort of performance that must have impressed the watching Luton Town scout.

In the 10th and 11th minutes Slough gained corners and from the second Cruse had a shot blocked on the line, one minute later Amos made a good run into the Dagenham penalty area and crashed to the ground but referee Teale waived aside pleas for a penalty and awarded a corner. From the kick the ball bobbed about in the six-yard area before Amos bundled it over the line to put Slough one goal up.

Slough maintained the pressure and in the 15th Jan Reid who spent much of his time assisting the attack had a good shot well saved by Huttley. In the 23rd Amos was again brought down in the Dagenham area but Mr Teale again waived play on and after this the play settled into a midfield duel. In the 24th a D'Arcy free kick was fired in by Reid but Huttley again made a fine save.

After the interval play took some time to settle down and Dagenham made the first strike when Baker-side footed over from a corner. In the 54th a shot from Hill was bundled off the line and Turls shot from the rebound was turned round by Dudley for a corner. In the 71st Slough got their second goal, a Cruse free kick was hit on by Turl and blocked on the line but Reid ran in and pushed the rebound home.

Dagenham were unable to do anything constructive after this even Ford coming off to be replaced by Robertson did not help and in their frustration Brookes found his name going into the book for a foul on Reid in the 86th minute.
