Slough’s 2-1 victory at Aveley on Saturday makes them almost certain of the championship of the Premier Division of the Athenian League, all they require from their last five games is six points. Dagenham still have an outside chance of taking the honours but Maidenhead and Leatherhead have now dropped out. The Town scorers on Saturday were Day, playing his first game for seven weeks, and Jamieson, who had a particularly good second half.

Slough had a strange line-up as Eaton was injured when training with the England squad during the week. Cruse and Amos played for England the previous evening and D'Arcy was on the sick list.

It was quite a last game on the billiard table like surface Aveley always seem able to provide. Slough included Polson, a young Scot, who has come into the area with his firm and has been training with the Town. The game started with Aveley going ahead after 12 minutes when Wimporey hit a well taken goal.

Day showed his long lay off had not slowed him down and in the 33rd minute he collected a Turl cross and whipped home the equalising goal. For the remainder of the half there was not much to choose between the teams but early in the second half Slough put on heavy pressure and Jamieson put them ahead in the 49th minute.

There was no more scoring but Slough had a number of good chances and they were well deserved winners. New boy Polson improved as the game went on.
