By gaining a point at Aveley on Saturday and thus preventing the home side from collecting three, Slough Town inched a little nearer to promotion. With Aveley their main rivals for promotion this match had all the ingredients of an exciting clash - but it never lived up to expectations.

Neither side knew how to cope with the strong wind, players on both sides gave the ball away with alarming frequency, and few shots were on target. Even so, David Kemp, Slough's solitary striker in the absence of the injured Geoff Anthony and Terry Brown, did have one header cleared off the line and saw another rebound off a post, so perhaps the visitors can count themselves a little unlucky not to have taken all three points.

The visiting supporters easily outnumbered the home fans but it was a pity they did not have more to shout about. Slough did enough attacking in the first-half to gain the initiative, but so tame was their play once they got in sight of the Aveley goal, that Willson the home 'keeper, had a job to keep warm!

There was little improvement after the interval, and Aveley, like Slough, found it difficult to make any sort of impression on the opposing defence. In inside-left Major they had a tricky, ball-playing striker, but he lacked the determination to upset a Slough defence in which Tim Turl and Perry Watts looked cool and confident.

It is a pity Turl did not do more attacking, for apart from Kemp he seemed the one Slough player capable of breaking the stalemate. A fine run by the Slough right-back almost brought a goal in the 75th minute. Turl set things up, but young George Burbridge, a substitute for Eugene Bisset minutes earlier, failed to get in his shot.

Thankfully the last 15 minutes of the game did a lot to make up for the dullness of the previous 75, with Aveley desperately pushing forward and Slough obviously content to settle for a point.

Aveley almost wrecked Slough's plans with a neat free-kick in the 82nd minute, but Major just failed to screw the ball into the net. Then, at the other end, from one of Slough's dozen corners Kemp saw a neat header cleared off the line.
