Slough emerged goalless from their Isthmian encounter with Leatherhead at Leatherhead on Tuesday evening, and by a stroke of irony three of the four goals scored against them came from centre-forward, Peter Lavers, whom Slough manager Roy Sleap released at the beginning of last season.

Leatherhead are regarded as one of the strongest teams in the league, so that the outcome of the match was not a surprise. Nevertheless, Slough did not let them have all their own way and in the second half should have scored a couple of goals.

Slough suffered their first reverse in the tenth minute of the game, with Willie Smith scoring for Leatherhead and four minutes later Lavers headed their second goal with the goalkeeper Spittle stranded.

After 23 minutes Lavers came back again to head home from a corner, and he completed the hat-trick 11 minutes later by driving in a cross from Doyle.

Just before half-time Slough’s Brendan O'Sullivan was booked for a foul on Kelly.

In the first half Slough’s back line could not seem to cope with the Leatherhead forwards, but at half-time there was a substitution when Cannon came on for Tomkins. This appeared to make all the difference to the Slough defence. In fact, the Slough team looked the better side during this half and it was only very good work by England goalkeeper Swannell that saved the day for Leatherhead.

In the 55th minute of the game Leatherhead's back, Webb, was booked for a foul on Kemp.
