Slough defeated at New Lodge

A late penalty kick gave Billericay Town all three points at New Lodge.

Slough Town’s struggle to find a second league win of the campaign continues after a late penalty kick gave Billericay Town the victory at New Lodge, writes Henry Cheal.

That being said, it was a great start for the Rebels as Freddie Grant’s attempt from outside the box hit the back of the net right in the top far corner to seal an early lead inside the first 7 minutes.

The lead was unfortunately short lived as Billericay levelled up the encounter just under ten minutes later. Slough were unable to make a clearance from the corner kick and Kweku Lucan fired a thunderbolt from the edge of the box into the top corner.

Leading up to the half hour mark, the Rebels defended numerous attempts from Billericay’s attack to keep the game on level terms.

Both teams had a fair share of opportunities to try and take the lead before the end of the first half but nothing really came of it, so the game was one apiece going into the break.

Billericay went on to dominate the second half and pressure Slough all over, with a few efforts comfortably saved by Jonathan North.

On the hour mark the Slough skipper Mark Nisbet fell over unchallenged and appeared to have injured his ankle but was able to keep on going until the last few minutes of the match.

With 15 minutes to go, Slough thought they had taken the lead with Joe Lawal turning in a cross but the goal was controversially ruled offside by the referee, which turned the match on its head for what was to come.

A Billericay attack with five minutes to go resulted in one of their men being brought down in the box with the ref deciding that it was a penalty - which was struck well into the bottom left hand side of the goal by Frankie Sutherland.

The result leaves the Rebels sitting 20th in the league, with a trip to Havant & Waterlooville up next.
