It Could Have Been Double Figures

Slough Town, in maintaining their position at the top of the Athenian League with this win over Hornchurch stretched their unbeaten run to 13 games, a run which must look impressive to any of the Rebels future opponents. The score does not truly represent Slough's superiority, in fact, had they taken their chances it could easily have been a double figure score in their favour.

After a poor first half in which both sides produced little football, Tommy Lawrence obviously had much to say at the interval because Slough looked a completely different side in the second half.

They could and should have had at least three goals but the bumpy pitch, a Hornchurch offside trap and slack finishing kept the score down. As it was, the home side almost grabbed a share of the points when Cerasoli broke away in the final minutes but fell over the ball at the crucial moment.

The first 10 minutes passed without excitement with only a Hornchurch corner in the eighth to add interest, then in the tenth Ritchie and Amos combined for the latter to have a shot well saved.

The home side gained two corners in the 12th minute but could not penetrate the Slough defence. In the 18th Slough's best move so far ended with Hill loosing control at the vital moment, After this Slough gained a number of free kicks but although these are usually one of their strong points it became a feature of this game that their kicks were wasted, except for a D'Arcy-Amos kick in the 28th which was blocked on the line.

One minute later a Reid effort was well saved by Wiseman and in the 30th a Slough corner was quickly cleared for Wiseman to race away and his shot hit the upright but he was given offside.

After the break we saw a completely different Slough pinning the Hornchurch defence back in their own area and in the 55th a cross from D'Arcy should have been netted by Hill. Three minutes later Slough were in front - a clearance from Meade was pounced upon by Amos and he raced away and gave Wiseman no chance with his powerful shot.

After this it was all Slough but they could not get the ball in the net, it was almost shooting practice but they had to be content with the one goal margin and of course the maximum two points.
